The Institute for Doctoral Studies in the Visual Arts (IDSVA) presents a unique PhD program in Visual Arts: Philosophy, Aesthetics, and Art Theory. This research-focused, low-residency degree is tailored for artists and intellectuals eager to explore the depths of art, culture, and human experience.
IDSVA’s innovative approach blends interactive online learning with immersive residencies, enabling art professionals to engage in profound scholarly pursuits without disrupting their careers, artistic endeavors, or other commitments. The program is structured to support both professional and intellectual development.
As a global institution without a traditional campus, IDSVA offers a nomadic educational experience. Students participate in online seminars and attend residencies in culturally rich locations including Rome, Spannocchia Castle in Tuscany, Siena, Venice, Berlin, Athens, Madrid, Marrakech, Mexico City, and New York City.
Dr. Jason Hoelscher, an IDSVA alumnus, reflects on his journey: “I was hired [by Georgia State University] in 2015 and received tenure in 2020, thanks to my publications, conference presentations, and exhibitions—achievements made possible by the IDSVA experience.” Hoelscher, author of ‘Art as Information Ecology,’ was recently promoted to Full Professor at Georgia Southern University.
International students are welcome to apply, as IDSVA is based in the United States but operates globally. Although F-1 visas for short residencies in the US can be provided, these do not allow for full-time US residence. Prospective students can reach out to Dr. Jeanne Moore, Director of Admissions, for more information. Applications for May 2026 are open, with a deadline of April 13 for those wishing to start in September 2026. Visit idsva.edu to learn more and apply.
