Dr. Max Hollein Appointed as Director of The Met

Dr. Max Hollein has been appointed as the new director of The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City, with his tenure beginning next month. Hollein, celebrated for his inventive strategies that blend traditional and modern art, arrives from a successful period at the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco. His selection concludes a thorough search initiated the previous year.

“I am honored to be joining The Met at such a pivotal time in its history,” Hollein stated in the museum’s official announcement. “I look forward to working with the talented team at The Met to continue the museum’s mission of bringing art and people together.”

The museum has been operating without a permanent director since 2020, after the last director resigned due to health issues. Hollein aims to enhance digital engagement and broaden the museum’s collection to better represent the global essence of art.

The board of trustees conveyed their confidence in Hollein’s capabilities. Chairwoman Lonnie G. Bunch III remarked, “Max’s visionary leadership and dedication to the arts make him the perfect choice to lead The Met into its next chapter.”
