John H. Beyer (1933–2026), a visionary architect, founded the New York-based firm Beyer Blinder Belle, focused on preserving architectural heritage against postwar urban renewal trends. Notable projects included the restoration of Grand Central Terminal, the Met Breuer building, and the Frick Collection.
Marian Goodman (1938–2026) carved a pioneering path as a New York gallerist. Over her six-decade career, she established galleries in cities like New York, Paris, London, and Los Angeles, representing influential artists like Nan Goldin, William Kentridge, and Julie Mehretu. Artist Lawrence Weiner once remarked on her strength and generosity, saying, “She could handle anything.”
Chung Sang-hwa (1932–2026) was a prominent figure in Korean modern art, renowned for his work in dansaekhwa, or monochrome painting. His impactful career spanned from the Korean War to the modern era, highlighted by retrospectives at France’s Musée d’art moderne et contemporain de Saint-Étienne Métropole in 2011 and Korea’s National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art in 2021.
Other notable figures remembered include Sal Buscema (1936–2026), a legendary comic book artist known for his work with Marvel Comics, and Helen Cherry (1924–2026), a prolific illustrator of over 30 books. Additionally, we honor James McCown (1956–2025), a photographer and architectural writer, Derek Morris (1940–2025), a British sculptor and educator, Barbara G. Walker (1930–2026), an inventor of knitting stitch patterns, and Barbara Yeomans (d. 2026), a dedicated artist and arts advocate.
