Exploring the Fusion of Art and Fashion at The Museum at FIT

The Museum at FIT (MFIT) unveils Art X Fashion, an in-depth exhibition exploring the vibrant relationship between fashion and fine art. This exhibition, curated by Dr. Elizabeth Way, showcases over 140 items from the museum’s permanent collection, including garments, accessories, textiles, photographs, and artworks. Running from February 18 to April 19, 2026, the display aims to break down traditional visual culture hierarchies, presenting fashion and art as equally influential expressions of social and creative forces.

Art X Fashion poses the question, “Is fashion art?” by employing the theoretical framework of art and fashion historian Dr. Christopher Richards. The exhibition illustrates fashion’s collaborations with fine art throughout history, from Rococo and Neoclassicism to Surrealism and Pop Art. Richards argues that the innovation and cultural impact of fashion qualify it as art, exemplified by designers such as Martin Margiela, Rei Kawakubo, and Christian Dior. The exhibit also features artists like Salvador Dalí and Pablo Picasso, demonstrating fashion’s role as an expressive tool.

Highlighting how fashion draws inspiration from fine art, the exhibition displays designs like Yves Saint Laurent’s Mondrian dresses and Eric Gaskins’ trompe-l’oeil beadwork. It also explores collaborations by designers such as Gianni Versace and Louis Vuitton, which bridge luxury and artistic practices. By examining these intersections, the exhibition underscores fashion’s significant dialogue with art. “Whether you decide that fashion is art or not, fashion’s strong and mutual relationship with fine art is undeniable,” states Way.

The exhibition will be accompanied by the Art X Fashion Symposium on March 27, featuring discussions with designers, curators, and artists. The Museum at FIT, accredited by the American Alliance of Museums, is the only New York City museum dedicated solely to fashion, with a collection of over 50,000 garments and accessories. It aims to enhance understanding and appreciation of fashion as a critical cultural force. Additional information is available at fitnyc.edu.
