Man Detained for Damaging Chihuly Glass Art Valued at $240,000

A man has been taken into custody by Seattle police for allegedly vandalizing valuable sculptures at the Chihuly Garden and Glass exhibit, known for showcasing the creations of renowned glass artist Dale Chihuly. The alleged perpetrator, 40-year-old Alexander Taylor Weis, is accused of inflicting $240,000 in damage to several glass artworks designed to resemble plants on the night of Monday, March 16.

Law enforcement apprehended Weis on charges of burglary and assault after arriving at the site, situated near Seattle’s iconic Space Needle. Reports indicate that Weis hurled fragments of the broken glass at security personnel and attempted multiple times to stab a guard with the shards. According to a representative from the venue speaking to Hyperallergic, no injuries were reported as a result of the altercation.

Authorities have yet to determine the suspect’s motive, categorizing the event as “a burglary” and stating that Weis was not an invited guest. Images released show numerous glass pieces shattered on the scene. Chihuly, a pivotal figure in the Studio Glass Movement, has significantly contributed to establishing glass as a medium in the fine art world.

The venue’s spokesperson did not specify which particular artworks were affected but noted that the suspect breached an outdoor garden area, where he damaged an “installation” that was subsequently removed. Operations resumed the following morning at 10 am, adhering to the usual schedule.

The installation’s garden display is updated seasonally, and the center features galleries highlighting four decades of the Washington native artist’s oeuvre. “We plan to replace the damaged pieces in the coming weeks,” the spokesperson informed Hyperallergic.
