Inside the NY Botanical Garden's Vibrant Orchid Show

In times of extreme events, New Yorkers often unite, finding camaraderie in shared experiences. Whether it’s the joy of a Knicks victory or the chill that transforms parts of the city into icy realms, residents come together. This spirit was evident earlier this month when many ventured to the Bronx to attend the New York Botanical Garden’s (NYBG) annual orchid show, themed ‘Concrete Jungle’ by Mr. Flower Fantastic.

Within the warm confines of the Enid A. Haupt Conservatory, visitors encountered a series of striking installations by the enigmatic Mr. Flower Fantastic, an artist known for both his anonymity and his unusual allergic reaction to flowers. Among the exhibits was a brownstone facade overtaken by vibrant blooms and quirky installations like a laundromat where washing machines double as terrariums, and a pizzeria offering unconventional orchid-themed toppings.

Mr. Flower Fantastic, who gained fame after creating a floral sculpture for Serena Williams, has been collaborating with NYBG for several years. His proposal to merge New York City’s iconic imagery with the garden’s lush environment resonated with curators. Michaela Wright, the director of Exhibition Content and Interpretation at NYBG, emphasized the significance of connecting their Bronx-based institution with the city’s vibrant biodiversity.

Visitors like Carolyn Townsend, who braved the cold to attend the show, expressed their commitment to experiencing the intersection of nature and urban life. The exhibition also serves as a platform for NYBG’s urban conservation efforts, introducing tools like Welikia that illustrate the historical ecology of New York City.

Ultimately, Mr. Flower Fantastic’s ‘Concrete Jungle’ offers a reflection on resilience and the cyclical nature of growth. Wright explains the enduring bloom of orchids as a metaphor for life and the city, highlighting the potential for rejuvenation even in the depths of winter, as the city awaits the arrival of spring.
