The Paul & Daisy Soros Fellowships for New Americans is dedicated to aiding immigrants and their offspring in pursuing graduate education in the United States, covering fields such as visual arts, design, architecture, and filmmaking. Each year, 30 individuals are awarded up to $90,000, which includes a stipend of up to $25,000 per year and tuition assistance up to $20,000 annually, for a maximum of two years at any accredited U.S. institution.
This fellowship embraces a wide range of creative disciplines, including painting, printmaking, sculpture, architecture, design, and film, in addition to fields like science, law, medicine, and public policy. Fellows become part of an enduring network of nearly 900 New Americans, whose family roots trace back to over 100 countries.
“In fields like architecture or art, legitimacy can be elusive and hard-earned. The Paul & Daisy Soros Fellowships provide that sense of legitimacy,” remarks Jonathan Herrera Soto, a 2023 Fellow pursuing an MFA in painting and printmaking at Yale School of Art. “Being surrounded by other immigrants and their children has been incredibly enriching.”
The selection process is based on merit and takes a comprehensive approach, valuing creativity, originality, initiative, and consistent achievement. Eligible candidates include naturalized citizens, green card holders, asylees, refugees, U.S.-born children of two immigrant parents, and those born abroad who completed high school and college in the U.S. Applicants must be 30 years old or younger and intend to enroll full-time in a graduate program during the 2027–2028 academic year.
