Japan’s historic Kumamoto Castle was damaged after a 7.1-magnitude earthquake struck the country today, July 28.
Video footage on X shows part of the moat wall collapsing onto the lawn and into the water near the entrance from the castle’s Ninomaru Plaza in Kumamoto Prefecture on the southwest island of Kyushu.
The footage captured the damage as it unfolded at the site, highlighting the impact of the quake on the historic landmark.
Kumamoto Castle is one of Japan’s best-known historic castles, and the incident follows the strong earthquake that hit the region today.
