Antwerp Art Museum Labels Government's Closure Plans as Unlawful

The Museum of Contemporary Art Antwerp has strongly criticized the government’s intention to shut it down and relocate its collection to a different city. This plan, disclosed in an official document, aims to centralize several cultural institutions within the city of Ghent.

Bart De Baere, the director of M HKA, expressed his surprise and concern regarding the proposal, highlighting that the museum was not consulted in the process. He remarked, “This is an illegal move,” emphasizing that it compromises the museum’s independence and overlooks Antwerp’s cultural legacy.

The museum is demanding an immediate cessation of the proposed plan and is currently seeking legal advice to contest the decision. They are determined to protect the museum’s autonomy and the cultural heritage it represents.
