Celebrating Queer Arab Artists Across Manhattan Galleries

An exhibition spread across two galleries in Manhattan brings together queer artists from countries like Palestine, Jordan, Lebanon, Syria, Egypt, and their diasporas. Staff Writer Rhea Nayyar invites us to ‘find one another in the dark’ through this artistic gathering.

While Valentine’s Day has passed, love continues to permeate the air, possibly aided by the season’s first warm day. Numerous ongoing exhibitions throughout the city explore themes of love in various forms, from explorations of sexuality and cults to creations by the fairy godmother of queercore, known for pieces like a giant penis wrapped in baby-pink frills.

This week also features a confluence of events, including the Lunar New Year, Ramadan, Ash Wednesday, Mardi Gras, and even a lunar eclipse. The abundance of exhibitions and events we highlight below speaks to the richness of this period.

Ridikkuluz shared with Hyperallergic that ‘The show is about giving the pen back to the writer, giving the paintbrush back to the artist, during this time of genocide.’ They emphasized the importance of these artists having a platform, as censorship might have prevented them from showcasing their work elsewhere.
