Diya Vij Appointed as New York City's Culture Commissioner

New York City’s Mayor, Zohran Mamdani, has officially announced his selection for the position of culture commissioner over the weekend. Diya Vij, an experienced curator known for her community-centered initiatives, has been appointed to the role. Her dedication to the arts and community engagement makes her an excellent choice for the position.

Additionally, I invite you to join me today at 3pm (ET) for an exclusive virtual discussion with artist and writer Damien Davis. Since joining our publication in 2024, Damien has become a prominent voice in the art world. During the conversation, we will explore his recent essays, his approach to studio practice, and the intersection of these two areas. This event is exclusive to Hyperallergic Members, and there’s still time to register if you’re interested.—Hakim Bishara, editor-in-chief

Diya Vij brings her expertise to this role after a brief tenure at Brooklyn’s Powerhouse Arts, where she served as vice president of curatorial and arts programs. She will be taking over from Laurie Cumbo, marking a significant transition in the city’s cultural leadership.
