Documentary Exposes Police Violence Through Women's Grief

They Won’t Call It Murder offers a penetrating and challenging examination of a community deeply impacted by police violence. Over the span of two decades, numerous residents were killed by police actions, yet not a single officer has faced murder charges.

Bereaved mothers, sisters, and grandmothers come forth with powerful critiques of a justice system that has claimed the lives of their loved ones. By centering on the victims’ families, the film reclaims the narrative from law enforcement and the relentless news cycle, presenting a poignant depiction of mourning and defiance.

Debuting at Sheffield Doc/Fest in September 2021, They Won’t Call It Murder has been featured at BAMcinemaFest, AFI FEST, and Camden International Film Festival. Additionally, it was showcased in DOC NYC’s 2021 Short List: Shorts program.

This film marks the directorial debut of Melissa Gira Grant and Ingrid Raphaël, with production by Ruun Nuur and Chase Whiteside.
