Five Women Challenge Unjust System in “They Won’t Call It Murder”

Five Women Challenge Unjust System in "They Won’t Call It Murder"

They Won’t Call It Murder provides a deeply personal and challenging examination of how police violence has permanently impacted a community. Over the past two decades, police have killed numerous residents, yet none have been charged with murder.

Bound by their shared grief, five women — mothers, sisters, and grandmothers — present a compelling critique of the justice system that claimed their loved ones. By spotlighting the families of the victims, the film reclaims the narrative from law enforcement and the relentless news cycle, offering a compassionate depiction of loss and resistance.

Premiering at Sheffield Doc/Fest in September 2021, They Won’t Call It Murder has been featured at BAMcinemaFest, AFI FEST, and the Camden International Film Festival. It also appeared in DOC NYC’s 2021 Short List: Shorts program.

This marks the directorial debut for Melissa Gira Grant and Ingrid Raphaël, with production by Ruun Nuur and Chase Whiteside. View They Won’t Call It Murder at fieldofvision.org.
