Honoring the Legacy of Influential Figures in the Art World

In Memoriam is a weekly tribute published every Wednesday afternoon, commemorating recent losses in the art community.

Bruno Bischofberger (1940–2026), a Swiss art historian, collector, and dealer, established galleries in Zurich and St. Moritz from the 1960s. He introduced American Pop Artists like Andy Warhol and Roy Lichtenstein to Swiss audiences. During the 1970s and ’80s, he advocated for Neo-Expressionists such as Julian Schnabel and George Condo. ‘Bischofberger was more than an art dealer; he was a visionary and a patron of the arts,’ stated his gallery, noting his significant impact on 20th-century art history.

Steven Durland (1951–2026) was an artist, writer, editor, and cultural organizer known for editing High Performance magazine, which featured artists like Nancy Buchanan and Carolee Schneemann. His work spanned ceramics, performance art, and mail art. Ray Burgoyne (1945–2026), a British painter, carpenter, and musician, created abstract paintings and played with the band the Flowerpots, opening for acts such as the Who.

Christina Dochwat (1934–2026) crafted icons, frescoes, and mosaics for Catholic Churches over five decades, with her work present in numerous churches across the United States. Jenny Falckenberg (1981–2026), a German gallerist, founded Unique Art Concepts in Hamburg, promoting emerging artists. She was the daughter of art collector Harald Falckenberg.

Manuela Hoelterhoff (1949–2026), a Pulitzer-winning arts critic, wrote for the Wall Street Journal and later served as executive editor at Bloomberg News. Ward Nichols (1930–2026) captured Appalachian landscapes, with his paintings exhibited across the U.S. Pamela A. Popeson (1954–2026) was an artist and MoMA preparator who penned her own obituary, expressing her dedication to art and life.

Yevhen Syvokin (1937–2026) brought innovation to Ukrainian animation during the Soviet era and founded an animation workshop in Kyiv. Samsudin Wahab (1984–2026), a Malaysian artist, defined a new art generation with his installations and received Malaysia’s top art prize in 2019. Vladimir Yarotsky (1985–2026), a Russian artist and political prisoner, was jailed in 2024 for a caricature of President Vladimir Putin.
