IDSVA Launches Advanced Philosophy and Art Program at Venice Biennale

The Biennale Certificate in Philosophy and Art: Seeds of the Future is a specialized four-day program crafted by the Institute for Doctoral Studies in the Visual Arts (IDSVA) in collaboration with philosopher Giovanbattista Tusa. It targets curators, artists, researchers, and cultural professionals who wish to delve into the dynamic environment of the Venice Biennale. Participants will explore philosophical themes such as Rooting, Growing, Branching, and Cultivating Futures, presenting art as a medium for world-disclosure and contextual intervention. The course incorporates theoretical insights, hands-on experiences, and collaborative exploration within the Biennale’s artworks and events.

Program Structure

Day 1 — Rooting: The course begins by philosophically pausing to consider how art becomes conceivable. The Biennale is not seen as a mere collection but as a complex field intertwined with histories of exclusion and epistemic influences.

Day 2 — Growing (with guest curator): On this day, an invited curator aids in examining the Biennale as a landscape of knowledge where diverse truths coexist and sometimes conflict.

Day 3 — Branching (self-study): Participants independently explore the Biennale pavilions, viewing them as temporal constructs that hint at unseen possibilities.

Day 4 — Cultivating Futures (with guest art theorist and/or artist): The final day focuses on the future as a philosophical state, with a guided pavilion visit transforming into a laboratory to consider art’s role in shaping the present and future.

Certification & Deliverables

Those who complete the full 25-hour program, including guided sessions and self-study, and submit a 1,000-word reflective essay, will be awarded an Advanced Certificate in Philosophy and Art.

Program Fee

The tuition fee is $1800, covering instruction, a Biennale pass, and certificate issuance. Participants are responsible for their own travel and accommodation in Venice.
