The Institute for Doctoral Studies in the Visual Arts (IDSVA) provides a unique PhD program in Visual Arts, Philosophy, Aesthetics, and Art Theory. This research-focused, low-residency doctorate is tailored for artists and thinkers eager to expand the understanding of art and culture. Combining online education with immersive residencies, IDSVA enables art professionals to pursue advanced studies without pausing their careers in teaching, art practice, or other professional roles. Participants can engage in intellectual growth alongside their current work commitments.
As a nomadic institution, IDSVA’s global community encompasses learners from across the world, offering education through online seminars and residencies in locations such as Rome, Spannocchia Castle in Tuscany, Siena, Venice, Berlin, Athens, Madrid, Marrakech, Mexico City, and New York City. Dr. Jason Hoelscher, an IDSVA alumnus of 2019 and full professor at Georgia Southern University, credits his hiring in 2015 and tenure in 2020 to the diverse achievements enabled by his IDSVA experience, including publications and exhibitions.
Though IDSVA is a U.S.-based institution, international students are welcome and can complete their program from abroad. The school can issue F-1 visas for a one-week residency in the U.S., though these don’t allow for full-time residence. Prospective students interested in the 2026 enrollment can schedule a discussion with Dr. Jeanne Moore, Director of Admissions. Application submissions for May 2026 are due by December 8, 2025.
