New York Studio School's Certificate: The Premier Alternative in Art Education

The Certificate program at New York Studio School offers an unparalleled and concentrated approach to studio arts education. As a challenging substitute to traditional degree paths, the program emphasizes building robust practices in Painting and Sculpture. It cultivates a community of committed peers and upholds the founding ethos of the school: artists instructing other aspiring artists through hands-on studio work and engaging dialogues. NYSS remains committed to the lifelong pursuit and practice of art.

This three-year program kicks off each semester with an intensive two-week Drawing or Sculpture Marathon, designed to immerse students in experimentation and enhance their perception and productivity. During the first two years, students occupy a shared studio space, working closely with faculty as they grow and transform. They attend classes in drawing, painting, and sculpture, participate in critiques by visiting artists, and undergo both weekly and final critiques. In the final year, artists transition to a private studio to create a comprehensive portfolio for the Certificate Completion Exhibition.

The Certificate is well-suited for a diverse range of students, including midcareer artists seeking to revitalize their work, recent graduates aiming to expand before entering graduate school, international artists, and individuals aspiring to pursue art following a career change. Participants vary in background, age, and experience but share a profound commitment to the serious study of art forms like drawing, painting, and sculpture.

Prospective students can apply for entry in either the Spring (by October 15) or Fall semester (by February 15). For more information or to arrange a visit, contact info@nyss.org.
