BOSTON — The Museum of Fine Arts, Boston is presenting “Of Light and Air: Winslow Homer in Watercolor,” a major survey focused on the artist’s lifelong engagement with the watercolor medium. The exhibition brings together dozens of works from the MFA’s extensive Homer holdings, displayed alongside related oils, drawings, and prints.
Winslow Homer (1836–1910) is widely recognized for his innovative approach to watercolor, a medium he transformed through experimentation and close observation of natural environments. The exhibition includes scenes from the Maine coast, the Adirondack Mountains, England’s rocky shores, the Caribbean, and other locations that shaped the artist’s practice.
Many of the MFA’s Homer watercolors are rarely exhibited due to their sensitivity to light, making this presentation the most significant display of the group in nearly half a century. The material spans from early drawings through late works, allowing visitors to trace the major developments in Homer’s career and the ecological, social, and artistic contexts that informed his vision.
“Of Light and Air: Winslow Homer in Watercolor” is on view in the Ann and Graham Gund Gallery through January 19, 2026.
