Season’s Greetings from the Big Apple

Season's Greetings from the Big Apple

Over the past month, each stroll I take from my apartment in Astoria leads me through rows of Christmas trees, some adorned with bright red ribbons, others unadorned. Around me, people are trimming wreaths, snapping selfies, pleading for larger trees, and carting them away. Despite the chilly weather, the unpredictability, and the constant stream of news, this scene makes me feel connected, embodying the essence of the holiday spirit. I want to express my gratitude for your presence in our community, whether you engage as a reader, a subscriber, or a paying member.

This time of year is intriguing — not only because it’s the festive season but also because we’re in a transitional phase with a new mayor elected yet not inaugurated. It’s a time for appreciation, but as any New Yorker knows, the city is always looking ahead. Along those lines, I encourage you to read Sami Abu Shumays’s open letter to the forthcoming mayoral administration. A statistic that stands out to me: The Met receives more funding from the city annually than all the institutions in Queens and Staten Island put together. It’s time city officials align their financial support with their promises.

Wherever your travels take you this week, whether it’s a subway ride or a flight, we hope it’s delightful. Warmest holiday wishes!
