Top Upstate New York Art Exhibitions to Explore This January

The beginning of a new year always brings with it a sense of renewal, and 2026 is no exception. Art continues to address our deepest questions with creative solutions, and Upstate New York is embracing this spirit with a vibrant lineup of exhibitions this January. At Convey/Er/Or Gallery, Loren Eiferman’s stick artworks offer a playful yet potent exploration of form, while Headstone Gallery showcases Michael McGrath’s enchanting mythical paintings. Meanwhile, Art Omi’s Yatta: Iron + Palm Wine presents an immersive installation blending sound and storytelling, and Time & Space Limited features politically charged paintings by co-founder Linda Mussmann. For a whimsical experience, visit Nina Katchadourian’s exhibition at the Hyde Collection, or for a more critical perspective on America’s global impact, Joyce Kozloff’s work at the Everson Museum of Art should not be missed.

A Gnawing Thought Utopia, curated by Mandolyn Wilson Rosen at 35 North Front Street in Kingston, runs through January 17 and features 18 New York-based artists. This exhibition captures the delicate allure of art that gently occupies the mind. Among the standout pieces is Padma Rajendran’s “Lemon Life” (2018), a surrealist stitch work on fabric, and Jenny Kemp’s vibrant “Festoon” (2025). Nancy Shaver contributes with her “Yellow Square Floating” (2025), where a cheerful yellow block contrasts with an arrangement of fabric-covered wooden blocks.

Loren Eiferman’s Gathering of Sticks at Convey/Er/Or Gallery in Poughkeepsie, open until January 19, showcases her unique approach to sculpture using twigs and tree limbs. Her works, such as “Powerstick #1” (2018) and “Albutilon” (2022), blend organic and futuristic elements to create pieces that seem to radiate mystical energy. Michael McGrath’s Under Panther Mountain at Headstone Gallery in Kingston runs through January 25 and features over 20 new works. His art is filled with recurring motifs like headless singers and fiery meteors, creating scenes that are both whimsical and thought-provoking.

At Art Omi in Ghent, Yatta’s Iron + Palm Wine continues until February 1, offering an experimental mix of video, sound, and digital collage. This installation delves into the artist’s exploration of West African musical traditions and storytelling, providing a rich sensory experience. Linda Mussmann’s Shebang! at Time & Space Limited in Hudson, running from January 3 to February 1, features recent paintings that challenge political indifference with bold expressions and questioning themes.

Karen Kimmel’s Basket as We, Basket as Me at Maiden Lane Gallery in Kingston, through February 8, reimagines traditional basketry with cotton rope, creating both sculptural forms and wearable art. Finally, Nina Katchadourian’s Fake Plants and Other Curiosities at the Hyde Collection in Glens Falls, open until March 8, features sculptures and photos from her Fake Plants project, while Joyce Kozloff’s Contested Territories, 1983-2023 at the Everson Museum in Syracuse, running through April 5, showcases her politically engaged works, including the impactful “Targets” (2000) sculpture.
