Venice Biennale Honors Koyo Kouoh with Posthumous Exhibition

In a poignant tribute to Koyo Kouoh, nine months after her passing, the Venice Biennale has unveiled the list of 111 artists and collectives featured in the esteemed international exhibition she curated, titled: In Minor Keys. The exhibition is described as a celebration of individual artistic voices, each artist embodying a unique musical key signature. Together, they create a harmonious blend that rejects grandiose orchestral displays in favor of subtle, resonant tones.

This evocative portrayal was shared by Rasha Salti, one of the advisors of the exhibition, who spoke during the announcement of the artist lineup. Salti’s words invite audiences to perceive curation as a form of musical composition, with Kouoh’s distinct vision resonating throughout the exhibition.

The roster of selected artists includes notable names such as Wangechi Mutu, Cauleen Smith, Carolina Caycedo, and Khaled Sabsabi. Sabsabi drew attention last year when Australia initially withdrew and later reinstated his participation in its national pavilion. In a significant decision, Kouoh’s team revealed that the prestigious Golden Lion awards will not be presented this year, due to the curator’s inability to finalize her choices before her untimely death in May at the age of 57.
