Brooklyn's Sharpe-Walentas Studio Program Offers Free Studio Spaces for Artists

The Sharpe-Walentas Studio Program is offering rent-free studio spaces to 17 visual artists for a year-long residency in the vibrant DUMBO area of Brooklyn, New York. This neighborhood is known for its art galleries, unique dining, and shopping venues, as well as a community of creative professionals. The studios are conveniently located near public parks, the city waterfront, and various transportation options.

Artists will have 24/7 access to the studios, which feature both freight and passenger elevator access and boast high ceilings. The residency for the 2026–2027 period will run from September 2026 to August 2027. A weekend event showcasing open studios is scheduled for spring 2027, giving the public a chance to engage with the artists’ work.

Since its inception in 1991, the Sharpe-Walentas Studio Program has been dedicated to providing artists with essential workspace and a supportive community. Each year, a professional jury, including artists and members of the Artists Advisory Committee, selects participants based on merit from a competitive pool of applicants. Those interested must submit their applications by the deadline of Thursday, January 15, 2026, at 11:59pm (EST). Further details and application instructions can be found at thestudioprogram.com/apply.
