The Role of Art in Nurturing Compassionate Relationships

The Role of Art in Nurturing Compassionate Relationships

This Valentine’s Day, I’ve been reflecting on how art influences love and the ways in which observing, appreciating, and even disagreeing about art have helped foster compassion in my relationship. My partner and I are both passionate and stubborn individuals (I’m an Aries, he’s a Taurus—wish us luck). When conflicts arise, neither of us easily concedes. However, sharing art—through discussions and contemplative moments—reveals our deep sensitivities, fostering a fertile ground for empathy. Our interactions soften, our breathing becomes more relaxed, and we embrace nuance. As Agnes Martin aptly noted, art is the tangible expression of our most delicate emotions.

This edition features artist and educator Mónica Palma, who uncovers inspiration in art and creation through her work with children, observing their intimate, often physical, interactions with the world. Damien Davis reflects on an artist’s archive and the sorrow of its disappearance, while Ed Simon explores the eerie aesthetics of liminality. For those celebrating today with partners, friends, or solo, we’ve curated a list of art-infused (and slightly sensual) events in NYC for your inspiration.
