Parallels with Orwell: The Era of State-Driven Intolerance

The editorial team at The Siren has long contemplated the similarities between today’s political climate and the dystopian society depicted in George Orwell’s 1984. Recent actions by the Trump Administration, which include intensified measures against immigrants and efforts to suppress dissent, have prompted us to dedicate our latest issue to exploring these connections.

We have witnessed alarming incidents involving the killing, torture, and forced expulsion of immigrants by federal authorities. Additionally, the execution of US citizens and the targeting of activists through criminalization have led us to believe that Orwell’s concept of ‘Hate Week’ has materialized in our present reality.

In this issue, we aim to amplify the voices of those under threat and those who have endured authoritarian regimes. Authors Junot Diaz, Enrique Del Risco, and Pamela Sneed discuss the encroachment of authoritarianism on our lives. Political cartoonists from Iran, Cuba, Venezuela, the Philippines, and the Americas contribute their insights on how tyrannical influences pervade our world.

We urge our readers to reflect deeply on these perspectives and take action before it becomes too late to reverse these disturbing trends.
