In Kyoung Chun’s artistic journey navigates the realms of painting and site-specific installations. Her interactive creations transcend traditional canvas boundaries, inviting audiences into environments that challenge perceptions and foster connections.
As an immigrant artist, Chun explores the evolving concept of home—simultaneously secure and delicate, steady yet fleeting. Her transparent houses, suspended constructs, and intimate paintings metaphorically address themes of belonging, proposing neighborhoods that are inclusive and welcoming. By merging the lines between inside and outside, personal and communal, her work cultivates shared spaces where vulnerability and strength coexist, making the act of viewing an act of belonging. Her art offers serene, joyful sanctuaries amid a chaotic world, suggesting ways for harmonious coexistence, then extends an invitation for viewers to enter.
Originating from Seoul, South Korea, and currently residing in Atlanta, Georgia, Chun’s multidisciplinary works have graced numerous galleries and institutions, including Poem 88, HiLo Press, Dashboard, The New Gallery, Emory University, Sumter Gallery, Stove Works, and the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, among others. Her art is part of esteemed collections such as the High Museum of Art, Goat Farm Arts Center, and the City of Atlanta Mayor’s Office of Cultural Affairs. Chun, a 2025 finalist for the Atlanta Artadia Award, recently concluded a three-year residency at Atlanta Contemporary and participated in the Virginia Center for Creative Arts’ residency in France.
