Kathleen MacKenzie, residing in Rosendale, New York, reflects on her workspace. She relocated from her Tribeca loft, where she lived for 35 years, to Rosendale in the Mid-Hudson Valley in 2012. Here, she transformed part of her garage into a 400-square-foot studio, where she has been creating for 14 years.
MacKenzie’s studio routine starts at 10am, with a break at noon, resuming work until late afternoon. As a mixed media artist, she focuses on one project at a time unless a deadline looms. Her workspace rituals include tea, water, and either silence or jazz, depending on the task at hand. This tranquil environment complements the introspective nature of her art.
Engaging with the local environment, MacKenzie volunteers at the Rosendale Theatre, joins the Woodstock Artists Association and Museum, and participates in a Buddhist practice group. She exhibits her work locally and contributes to a vibrant art community through various activities, including writing and poetry groups. Her studio’s light, privacy, and the sound of birds are cherished aspects, though she wishes for improved internet and cell service.
Among Upstate’s museums, WAAM stands out for MacKenzie, known for its support of local artists. Her favorite medium is crafting experimental video art using Final Cut Pro on her iMac, despite her love for diverse art forms like painting and photography.
