Major contemporary art surveys have long shared one familiar trait: a strong tilt toward male artists. This year’s Whitney Biennial in New York may offer a more representative picture of American art today, especially in terms of race and gender, than is usually the case.
Even so, curator and artist Christine “C.” Finley is arriving at the much-anticipated event with a project of her own. She is presenting the second edition of the wryly titled Whitney Houston Biennial, an exhibition devoted exclusively to women artists.
The show positions itself as a pointed, and playful, response to the broader art world’s persistent imbalance. By centering women only, it offers a different lens on the current moment in contemporary art.
