In advance of London’s V&A East opening on April 18, the museum has revealed an outdoor work that the public can already view: A Place Beyond (2026), by Thomas J Price. Standing 18 feet tall, it is the largest sculpture the British artist has created to date.
A Place Beyond reflects Price’s familiar artistic approach. As in his earlier work, the woman cast in bronze is not based on a single real-life individual, but rather on a composite drawn from found images, 3D scans, and the artist’s own observations.
She is dressed in an ordinary outfit, another hallmark of Price’s practice. The sculpture continues the artist’s interest in presenting figures that feel both specific and universal.
The new work marks a significant presence outside the soon-to-open institution, offering visitors an early look at one of V&A East’s public-facing artworks. It also extends Price’s ongoing exploration of scale, identity, and representation in bronze.
