Artistic Spotlight: Joan Semmel & Rama Duwaji

Artistic Spotlight: Joan Semmel & Rama Duwaji

Last week, as we enjoyed the pleasant weather, our entire editorial team took the G train to MoMA PS1 for the Greater New York exhibit. The venue, a repurposed public school, was filled with artwork by emerging artists from the city, across three floors. The exhibit was particularly captivating as it reflected the dynamic essence of New York City — from delivery drivers with makeshift mittens on e-bikes to the steam radiator pipes that weave through our bathrooms, and, of course, the ever-present rats!

We will soon share a list of artworks that left a lasting impression on us, whether because we adored them, were unsure about them, or are still contemplating them. In the meantime, you can read some of our initial reflections below.

In related news about New York artists, we have an artist residing in Gracie Mansion! Don’t miss the Editor-in-Chief Hakim Bishara’s interview with NYC First Lady Rama Duwaji. The conversation delves beyond her teenage tweets, despite what the New York Times and New York Post focused on. Additionally, we feature a profile on Joan Semmel, the iconic nonagenarian artist whose intriguing and powerful portraits are currently displayed at the Jewish Museum and Alexander Gray gallery.
