Artists Share Insights on Their Creative Spaces

Welcome to the 327th edition of A View From the Easel, a series where artists discuss their workspaces. This week, artists turn law school notes into art and seamlessly integrate their studios into daily routines. Interested in participating? Review our submission guidelines and share details about your studio using this form. All types of mediums and workspaces, including home studios, are welcomed.

George Seyffert, based in Dumbo, Brooklyn, has been working in his studio for a year. His studio serves as an evening and weekend retreat, providing an escape from his attorney day job. With a city night view, a diverse music playlist, and occasionally a drink or smoke break, Seyffert immerses himself in his art. His work process varies with his mood, from simple tasks after long workdays to intense 16-hour weekend sessions.

This is Seyffert’s second studio, and its windows allow him to disconnect from his corporate life while remaining in the vibrant city. The location offers solitude and inspiration from the city skyline and the community of fellow artists in the building. He values the proximity to the East River and the cultural richness of Dumbo. While he wishes for more space and better heating in winter, he finds the studio nearly perfect.

Nimisha Doongarwal, working in Berkeley, California, has been in her space for two and a half years. Her studio time begins post-workday, often stretching late into the night. Her flexible approach allows her work to spill into other areas of her home and adapt to her schedule. The fluidity of her space invites organic creativity, allowing her to incorporate real-time textures and emotions into her work.

Doongarwal’s work is informed by her environment and community interactions. She engages with local art groups, such as the Northern California Women’s Caucus for Art and ArtTogether, which keeps her connected to current artistic dialogues. While she loves the adaptable nature of her home studio, she occasionally yearns for the camaraderie of a shared studio space. Her favorite materials include fabrics and papers, especially those with personal and historical significance, like saris worn by her family.
