Exploring the Science and Art of Color with Acclaimed Artists

Exploring the Science and Art of Color with Acclaimed Artists

On Tuesday, August 12, 2025, at 2pm (ET), Hyperallergic Members will have the opportunity to engage in a virtual discussion with two distinguished artists, Rina Banerjee and Ellie Irons, about the material aspects of paint. This event will focus on the nuances of using various pigments and surfaces, the intricate chemistry involved in crafting their own paints, and the decision-making process behind color selection.

Under the moderation of Hrag Vartanian, this conversation aims to uncover the dynamic connection between chemistry and color, tracing from ancient pigment traditions to modern ecological practices. The artists will share insights on how they navigate the convergence of science, culture, and creativity in their artistic endeavors.

The session, hosted on Crowdcast, is scheduled for Tuesday, August 12, from 2 to 3pm (ET). Participants will also have the chance to pose questions following the discussion. Hyperallergic Members are encouraged to register on Crowdcast to be part of this enriching event.

Rina Banerjee, originally from Kolkata, India, now based in New York City, integrates her multicultural experiences and immigrant narrative into her art, which examines themes of ethnicity, race, migration, and American Diasporic histories. Her work has been exhibited globally, including in prestigious biennials such as the Venice Biennale.

Ellie Irons, residing in Troy, New York, merges socially engaged art with ecological fieldwork. Her projects often focus on urban plants and environmental collaborations. Irons earned her MFA from Hunter College and a PhD from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. Her book, ‘Feral Hues: A Guide to Painting with Weeds,’ was released in 2023.
