Intensive Summer Sessions in Art at New York Studio School

“The Marathon was an unforgettable experience and significant for my growth as an artist. I improved significantly and feel prepared to tackle subjects I previously avoided. It was time well spent, and I would eagerly participate again,” expressed Kareem Johnson regarding the Summer Drawing Marathon.

The New York Studio School’s Marathon program offers students a challenging two-week session, immersing them in diverse techniques in both drawing and painting. These sessions are available in both virtual and in-person formats. Participants dedicate full days from 9am to 6pm, consistently refining their skills and concluding with critiques. The program is guided by the school’s faculty alongside esteemed visiting artists throughout the session.

This intensive experience encourages students to discover innovative methods of artistic creation, tackling the complexities of drawing and painting with determination. The program includes comprehensive group discussions and individual critiques to intellectually stimulate participants. Artists of all skill levels are encouraged to apply to the New York Studio School.

Virtual Marathons provide an exceptional chance for global artists to partake in these high-quality intensives from their own studios. Conducted live using Zoom and Padlet, these courses replicate the intensive exercises and insights of in-person Marathons, fostering a vibrant international artistic community.

Gregg Rosen, reflecting on the Summer Drawing Marathon, noted, “The Marathon broadened my perspective on spatial relationships within compositions. Instead of focusing solely on figures, I began to notice the surrounding objects, prompting me to reassess my studio habits and emphasize spatial dynamics in my work.”
