Frankenthaler Foundation Launches Sixth Round of Climate Grants

The Helen Frankenthaler Foundation has announced the opening of its sixth grant cycle for the Frankenthaler Climate Initiative (FCI), reinforcing its dedication to fostering a sustainable future within the visual arts sector.

Established in 2021, FCI has emerged as the largest private national grant program of its type, aiding U.S. visual arts organizations by facilitating assessments, planning, and implementing strategies to lessen their environmental impact. This is achieved through clean energy generation and enhancing energy efficiency. Managed in collaboration with Environment & Culture Partners and Green Design Collaborative, FCI has distributed over $17.5 million to 249 institutions across 40 states so far.

Elizabeth Smith, Executive Director of the Helen Frankenthaler Foundation, commented, “With each successive cycle, we continue to see how the arts sector is driving forward new models for sustainability. Arts organizations across the country are translating their values into action, developing projects that not only improve their energy performance but also model new ways of thinking about stewardship and resourcefulness. Each cycle contributes to shaping a resilient, low-carbon cultural landscape.”

Organizations that qualify are encouraged to apply for one of the following grant types: Catalyst Grants offering up to $20,000 for small-scale projects; Scoping Grants up to $25,000 for energy assessments; Technical Assistance Grants up to $50,000 for advanced evaluations; and Implementation Grants up to $100,000 for large-scale projects. Applicants must have a mission centered around visual arts and can include institutions such as museums, art schools, artist residency programs, and non-profit art events.

Past recipients are eligible to apply for a different grant or project type unless they have been awarded three FCI grants previously. Drafts for Implementation Grants are due by February 27, 2026, with all final applications required by March 27, 2026, at 5pm (ET).
