Following the announcement of Sally Tallant’s exit as Executive Director, the Queens Museum has appointed Debra Wimpfheimer, a native of Queens, to take over the role starting this summer. Wimpfheimer, who has been with the museum for over two decades and currently serves as deputy director, is set to lead the institution into its next phase of development.
As Tallant moves on after a seven-year tenure to direct the Hayward Gallery at Southbank Centre in London, Wimpfheimer will manage several ongoing projects at the museum. She has been instrumental in the museum’s fundraising efforts for its expansion, which includes plans for a new children’s museum, an outdoor playspace inspired by Isamu Noguchi, facilities for older adults, and additional collection galleries.
Expressing her enthusiasm for the museum’s growth, Wimpfheimer stated in an email to Hyperallergic, “I look forward to bringing our wonderful collections to light in our newly designed galleries.” She also revealed that exhibitions are scheduled through 2029 and that the museum is in the process of hiring a chief curator to help shape new programming for the revamped space.
Wimpfheimer highlighted the future outdoor playspace as a “cultural destination connecting the museum and park,” noting Noguchi’s ties to Queens and the lack of a children’s space he designed in New York. Having previously served as interim director twice, her leadership experience positions her well for the role.
Throughout her career, Wimpfheimer has taken on significant roles at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, and the Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts. Reflecting on her new position, she emphasized her commitment to making the museum a vibrant and inclusive space, stating, “Queens is the most ethnically, linguistically and culturally diverse area in the world.”
