Jean-Michel Basquiat’s iconic 1982 artwork, ‘Untitled,’ has achieved a remarkable sale price of $110.5 million during a Sotheby’s auction in New York. This sale ranks the painting among the highest-priced artworks ever sold at auction. Characterized by its vivid depiction of a skull-like figure, the piece was purchased by Japanese collector Yusaku Maezawa following an intense bidding competition.

The transaction sets a new benchmark for Basquiat, eclipsing his previous record of $57.3 million. This event underscores the persistent allure and substantial market value of Basquiat’s creations, further cementing his legacy in the contemporary art world.

“I am delighted to announce my acquisition of this masterpiece,” Maezawa shared on Instagram. The auction, featuring numerous other high-value pieces, drew significant global attention and established multiple new records, reflecting the robust demand for exceptional artworks.
