Exploring the Absurd in Steve DiBenedetto's Art at Derek Eller Gallery

Steve DiBenedetto, an influential painter since the 1980s, is known for his dynamic approach, shifting between figuration and abstraction. His work is a blend of comic and unsettling elements, reflecting the chaotic times we live in. DiBenedetto’s current exhibition at Derek Eller, titled Spiral Architect, combines two of his key interests: spirals and the design of functional environments. These elements reflect his view of painting as a quest for a supportive structure, offering a talisman for navigating today’s collective crises.

Unlike artists such as Hilma af Klint and Forrest Bess, who saw themselves as conduits for higher messages, DiBenedetto aims to unlock the viewer’s psychic unconscious, tapping into the human mind’s visionary potential. His work, marked by a cosmic sense of the absurd, features 17 paintings, with the larger ones showcasing a chaotic interplay of human, octopus, and machine-like forms. One prominent piece, “The Octopus Paradox” (2025–26), presents a sci-fi landscape filled with disembodied parts and interconnected forms, blending humor with a sense of unease.

DiBenedetto’s technique brings speculative elements to life, with each section of his large canvases demanding unique treatments to prevent chaos. This visionary approach captures the anxiety of our current era, reflecting the uncertainty many feel in a world fraught with threats. The smaller paintings, dated from 2022 to 2026, demonstrate his process-driven methods, exploring diverse textures and forms reminiscent of mystical diagrams and ancient city maps.

Through his art, DiBenedetto addresses the anxieties and aspirations of our fast-paced world, which seems to have lost its moral direction. By blending humor, mystery, and skepticism, he explores our uncertain grasp on reality. Spiral Architect is on view at Derek Eller Gallery (38 Walker Street, Tribeca, Manhattan) until April 25, curated by the gallery.
