Frieze Collaborates With The Whitney and Others for NY Art Show

Art Movements, a weekly digest released every Thursday, highlights crucial updates, appointments, and accolades from the bustling art scene. This week, Frieze disclosed its collaboration with several New York City cultural entities to synchronize performances and exhibitions with its upcoming May fair.

The Whitney Museum of American Art will feature Jonathan González’s Body Configurations (2023–25), a collection crafted specifically for the Whitney Biennial. Meanwhile, Dia Art Foundation will present David Lamelas’s video work “To Pour Milk into a Glass” (1972), among other pieces. Could this partnership signal a new era of acknowledged collaborations between institutional and commercial art spheres, historically whispered about in hushed tones? According to a press release, this initiative aims to “extend Frieze New York beyond the fair aisles into major cultural institutions,” hinting at a shift in perception.

Patsy Phillips (Cherokee Nation), who has led the Museum of Contemporary Native Arts at the Institute of American Indian Arts for 18 years, is set to retire in June. Her career spans over 30 years, including roles at ATLATL in Phoenix and the Smithsonian’s National Museum of the American Indian. Seph Rodney highlighted Phillips’s impact on MoCNA in a Hyperallergic feature last year.

Deana Lawson and Brandon Ndife are the chosen residents for the Speed Art Museum’s 2026 Sam Gilliam Visiting Artist Program. The Estate of Pope.L will now be represented by Gladstone Gallery, alongside Modern Art in London and Vielmetter in Los Angeles. Jessica Silverman gallery has taken on representation for Koak, and Mucki Botkay is now represented by Galatea in São Paulo and Salvador, Brazil.

Filmmaker Steve McQueen has been awarded the 2026 Erasmus Prize, while Colectivo Los Ingrávidos received the 2026 Schering Stiftung Award for Artistic Research. Featured above is a whimsical piece by Milwaukee artist Korinthia Klein, depicting a pink marshmallow bunny with a CPAP machine in a miniature setting. This work is part of the Racine Art Museum’s PEEPS®-themed exhibit, which showcases creative interpretations of Easter treats with titles like “The Peepeux Tapestry” and “Mount Peepmore” (both 2026).
