Lynda Roscoe Hartigan is set to return to the Smithsonian American Art Museum in Washington, DC, taking on the role of director. Hartigan previously served as the museum’s chief curator and deputy director during her two-decade tenure at the institution.
Currently, Hartigan is the director of the Peabody Essex Museum in Salem, Massachusetts. Her earlier work at the Smithsonian included curating notable exhibitions such as ‘American Kaleidoscope: Themes and Perspectives in Recent Art’ and ‘African American Art: Harlem Renaissance, Civil Rights Era, and Beyond.’
At the Peabody Essex Museum, Hartigan has been recognized for her focus on promoting inclusion and diversity. She has also worked diligently to enhance the museum’s collection of Native American art, demonstrating her commitment to broadening cultural representation.
