Pulitzer Prize-Winning Critic Sebastian Smee Among Those Laid Off at Washington Post

In a significant restructuring, the Washington Post has terminated the position of Sebastian Smee, a Pulitzer Prize-winning art critic, along with several other employees in its Arts section. This move, described as a ‘bloodbath,’ comes from the newspaper owned by Jeff Bezos. The publication has also removed all of its staff photographers, sparking discussions about its future visual approach.

On February 4, employees began receiving layoff notifications following rumors of extensive downsizing. Reportedly, the layoffs affected one-third of the Post’s workforce, involving more than 300 individuals, and severely impacted sections including Books, Sports, and international coverage desks.

Smee, who joined the Washington Post in January 2018, expressed gratitude for his tenure at the paper, stating, ‘I am sorry for all my brilliant colleagues, across the company, who lost their jobs.’ Smee, an Australian-born critic recognized for his modern and contemporary art critiques, has authored several art history books, including ‘Paris in Ruins: Love, War, and the Birth of Impressionism,’ published in 2024. He was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for Criticism in 2011.

The Arts section saw additional layoffs, affecting various editors and critics, though Senior Art and Architecture Critic Philip Kennicott, along with reporters Janay Kingsberry, Kelsey Ables, and Geoff Edgers, remain employed. Former theater critic Naveen Kumar remarked on X about his departure, expressing hope for the future of arts coverage.

Additionally, the decision to eliminate the paper’s eight staff photojournalists has drawn attention. Marvin Joseph, a long-serving staff photographer since 1996, described the cuts as unexpected. Reflecting on his career, Joseph highlighted a memorable photograph of Chris Evert and Martina Navratilova taken in May 2023, which boosted readership.

Public backlash against owner Jeff Bezos has intensified, especially following his controversial editorial decisions and the Post’s shifting policies. Bezos’ alignment with President Donald Trump and financial ties to major corporations have further fueled criticism from readers and staff.
