Refreshing Discoveries at Frieze New York

Refreshing Discoveries at Frieze New York

Salads aren’t my favorite, nor are expansive art fairs, but it never struck me that the two might share similarities. Senior Editor Valentina Di Liscia, who attended Frieze New York recently, compared experiencing the massive fair to ‘devouring a mass-produced chopped salad in a mundane Sweetgreen.’

In spite of this, she discovered several pieces that transported her from the monotony of the white-cube setting into vibrant realms of luxuriant foliage, ethereal portraits, and ancestral gardens. Meanwhile, our team also reports from Future Fair, 1-54, and TEFAF happening elsewhere in the city.

We also pay tribute to Austrian artist Valie Export, who passed away last Thursday at the age of 85. Critic Olivia McEwan reflects on her revolutionary career and the decades of guerrilla performance that laid the groundwork for future waves of bold, feminist artists.
