Golf courses are now found across the globe, with more than 38,000 spread across over 200 countries and regions. For Hudson Shaoxia Zhang, however, the fairway is not simply a place to play but a lasting source of artistic inspiration.
The Chinese American artist, who is currently the U.S. Golf Art Foundation Fellow, has developed a body of work centered on golf-course landscapes. Through impressionistic painting, he transforms manicured greens, bunkers, water hazards, and the surrounding terrain into scenes shaped by atmosphere and memory.
In Zhang’s painting The Classic Course at High Altitude (Jade Dragon Snow Mountain Golf Club, Lijiang, Yunnan, China) (2023), a mountain course is set against tall trees and striking snow-covered peaks beneath a sky of drifting low clouds. A red flag stands out on the green in the foreground, while the wider landscape is rendered with softened brushwork and evocative color.
His work underscores the way golf courses have become a rich source of creative material in his practice. In Zhang’s hands, the course emerges as a place where nature, leisure, design, and memory come together.
