ART BUSAN 2026 Paves the Way for a Sustainable Art Ecosystem

Amid the global art market’s transition from rapid expansion to consolidation, ART BUSAN 2026 stands out as a fair emphasizing not only visibility and lucrative sales but also fostering a sustainable collecting environment. As the fair celebrates its 15th anniversary, it introduces a novel market model for Korea that prioritizes long-term relationships, cross-disciplinary collecting, and stable structures over speculative growth.

Scheduled at BEXCO from May 21 to 24, ART BUSAN 2026 will feature more than 110 galleries from 18 nations. A significant evolution at this year’s fair is the transformation of the traditional fair format by incorporating innovative segments such as DEFINE and LIGHTHAUS.

DEFINE blurs the lines between contemporary art and collectible design by showcasing furniture, crafts, and functional objects within the fair’s setting. Projects from Karimoku, Fritz Hansen, Galerie Philia, and solo presentations by Kengo Kuma highlight this section. Rather than treating design as a secondary element, DEFINE elevates it to a central aspect of contemporary collecting culture, reflecting changes in collector preferences, especially among younger demographics.

LIGHTHAUS strengthens this paradigm by converting gallery booths into curated spatial experiences. With its “booth-in-booth” design, this section merges curatorial vision and exhibition design, moving beyond mere transactional displays. Galleries such as Whitestone Gallery, PS CENTER, and OKNP × Ginza Tsutaya Books participate in this segment.

Through these initiatives, ART BUSAN is transforming into a platform that integrates art, design, architecture, and everyday culture, advocating for sustained engagement over rapid consumption. This approach proposes a more balanced and resilient framework for Korea’s art market, where continuity, functionality, and cultural relevance define value.
